the lightning bolt yesterday was a productive day of camp 4 bouldering in yosemite valley for a group of 20 or so bay area climbers. the group descended upon the deserted bouldering mecca early in the morning on this early winter day. the air felt crisp and the rock was tacky. after an extended warm-up on ament arete and the surrounding boulders, several berkeley locals went on what became an all-out send-fest.

as ingar proceeded to quickly size-up and dispatch bruce lee, chris and stephan went to work on midnight lightning. stephan, on his second day of working the renowned problem, looked solid from the start all the way through setting up for the committing mantel. chris nailed the dyno to the lightning bolt hold and treated the growing crowd to a "kauk-esque" campus move to the undercling hold. at this point the send-train was ready to leave the station.

ingar then made an appearance at the columbia boulder, hiked the moves to the undercling, made a tentative go at loading into the mantel, retreated to a "rest" on the undercling, and thanks to the hospitality of his spotters retrieved his chalkbag from the landing and gave it a dip. after another haphazard upward motion, ingar decided this wasn't going to be the send and hit the pads. by this time most of the bay area contingent had gathered around to support not only stephan and ingar, but daniel as well, in their bids to send the fabled problem. ingar was the first to latch the jug over the mantel and downclimb the tree, followed shortly by an ecstatic stephan. while ingar made quick work of thriller a round of cheers from the center of camp 4 could only mean that yet another had claimed an ascent. upon returning to the columbia boulder i found daniel taking his time on the chimney moves off of the massive hunk of granite. amazing.

those of us that had earlier joked about getting on the improbable dominator were delighted to find tom having his way with the opening moves of this dramatic problem. tom was looking strong as the valley bouldering pubah himself, ron kauk, crept out from around a boulder and passed the crowd, stopping long to give the heinous problem a look of disgust and trade a quip or two with the younger crowd. the end of the day left most us of reeling in inspiration as we reviewed the remarkable ticklist of this perfectly conditioned day. dinner, drinks and great conversation ended what turned out to be an epic day in the valley for bay area climbers.
